Irish retailer Superquinn is to cut 400 jobs as part of its Programme for Competitiveness and Change. The retailer said it has had to introduce due to the recent increases in cross border shopping, brought about by the devaluation of the sterling. In a statement sent out to staff, the Company’s Chairman, Simon Burke said the cuts were necessary to enable the chain to operate in a radically changed business environment. The grocer has begun formal negotiations with union representatives to implement the plans. The move follows a warning by Burke last November of substantial losses in the retail sector, as a result of the financial downturn and rise of cross border shopping.
