Carrefour makes staff redundant after expanding self-checkouts

Carrefour’s aggressive plan to roll out self-checkouts and self scanning to 125 of its French hypermarkets by May 2010 is ahead of schedule. According to a report in French magazine Challenges, Carrefour has already rolled out self-service checkouts to 109 of its hypermarkets in France. Every five of these tills are supervised by two employees. According to the report, Carrefour has already reduced its staff in France this year by 8,000, equivalent to 3,200 full-time jobs. Apart from introducing self-checkouts, the retail giant brought more efficiency into its stores by discontinuing some services such as its call centre, some after sales services, manned weighing of fruit and vegetables as well as dedicated checkouts for customers who exclusively purchase electronics.
